Stop Adani! – Y Dig Up Coal

Original Song by Jack Moralis and Victor Willis and sung by Village People
Parody words by Jenny Fitzgibbon & Dermot Dorgan and sung by Solar Village People all over Australia to #StopAdani

In Maleny we recorded a community video of this song on Feb 17th at 10.30 am in the main street. We had great fun! 100 people came along to show their opposition to the mine.

LISTEN TO THE SONG HERE 💃🏼🕺🏻💃🏼🕺🏻

Watch the video, share it and then perform it in your own community!

Stop Adani! – There’s no need to dig coal
Stop Adani! – and leave a poisonous hole
Stop Adani! – with farmers paying the toll
We must leave coal in the ground
Stop Adani! – renewable we will go
Stop Adani! – it will cost us less dough
Stop Adani! – and I’m sure we will find
Climate change re-duced just in time       So-lar and the wind!

Chorus
With sun to spare we say – Why Dig Up Coal    x2
With renewable pow’r from the wind and the sun
Enough – for everyone
With sun to spare we say – Why Dig Up Coal    x2
With community power, we share in the deal
How fabulous will we feel?

Stop Adani! – Vote to make pollies see
Stop Adani! – Aus-tral-i-ans want to be
Stop Adani! – building green energy
We must leave coal in the ground
Stop Adani! – we can go solar today
Stop Adani! – if we vote fossils away
Stop Adani! – we’re asking Why Dig Up Coal
When re-new-a-ble is the goal                   So-lar and the wind!

Chorus ….

Stop Adani! – It’s a fact we all know
Stop Adani! – that tribal elders say “no”
Stop Adani! – so with Galiliee coal
We must leave it in the ground
Stop Adani! – it’s Aboriginal land
Stop Adani! – For the Artesian we stand
Stop Adani! – The power is in our hand
When we use our vote to de-mand              So-lar and the wind!

Rounds can be handy…

Using rounds can add variety and harmony to a song at a rally …

David Pizza the Poet handed me these rounds after a Carbon Canaries Workshop at Woodford.: (Row, row, row your boat and London’s Burning)

Rows and rows of solar farms
Coming all on-stream
Merrily fighting climate change
No it’s not a dream!

and

Planet’s burning, Planet’s burning
Fix the Engine, Fix the Engine
Solar Power! Solar Power!
Yes we oughta, Yes we oughta!

Planet’s burning, Planet’s burning
Fix the System, Fix the System
Fossil-free! Fossil-free!
Yes we oughta, Yes we oughta!

There’s also The Simple Life (three blind mice) and Dona Nobis Common Sense

Also other words to 3 Blind Mice …

Coal Seam Gas, Coal Seam Gas
Bad for everyone, Bad for everyone
There’s all that fracking, and leaking is rife
They poison the water and give farmers strife
It won’t happen here while my body has life
No Coal Seam Gas

Coal Seam Gas, Coal Seam Gas
Worth making a fuss, worth making a fuss
With weak regulations and lies and spin
Where profits abound, Paid lobbyists win
Is this a democ-cracy we live in?
No Coal Seam Gas

The Great Barrier Reef, the Great barrier Reef
Loved by everyone, loved by everyone
Now coal mining, dredging and run-off is rife,
With warming, the fish and the coral in strife
If you take a stand for one thing in your life
The Great Barrier Reef

New ‘reefy’ verse for Powered by the sky

New Verse

It is best to Divest from coal and all the rest
Now that we’re powered by the sky.
Where the wind keeps on blowing,
And solar farms keep glowing,
beneath that sunny sky.
And my Daddy and mother spoke of it so well
That the pals of my childhood divested as well
Now our Super’s in trust
So the reef will not go bust
Now that we’re powered by the sky.

Bye Bye Coal

Parodied by Jenny Fitzgibbon
Bye Bye Love” written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant 1957.
It is best known in a debut recording by The Everly Brothers,

Bye Bye Coal
Bye Bye fossil fuels
Hello renewable
Energy from the sky
Bye bye Coal
reduce Climate stress
Hello cleverness
Goodbye to coal goodbye
Goodbye to coal goodbye

Got thru denial, I’m thru with doubt
Let’s get together, work this thing out
and here’s the reason, I feel so free
I got good people surrounding me

Bye Bye Coal …

We light the dark now with something new
We’ll still be happy wi’ no fossil fuel
and here’s the reason, I feel so free
I got good people surrounding me

Bye bye coal …

We’re Powered By The Sky (New Verse added)

printable version here

tune: “Along the Road to Gundagai”
words and music by Jack O’Hagan, 1922,
parodied by Paul Spencer, 2014

There’s a way to defray,
Rising power costs today,
Now that we’re powered by the sky.
Where the wind keeps on blowing,
And solar farms keep glowing,
Beneath that sunny sky.

That my daddy and mother,
Will love I can tell,
And the pals of my childhood,
Installed one as well.

So no more will I moan,
When the power bills come home,
Now that we’re powered by the sky.

The next verse was added for a reef event.

It is best to Divest from coal and all the rest
Now that we’re powered by the sky.
Where the wind keeps on blowing,
And solar farms keep glowing,
beneath that sunny sky.
And my Daddy and mother spoke of it so well
That the pals of my childhood divested as well
Now our Super’s in trust
So the reef will not go bust
Now that we’re powered by the sky.
