The Climate is a-Changing

THE CLIMATE IS A-CHANGING (D. Dorgan & B. Dylan)

Come gather round people, we must make a stand,
Beause pow’r concedes nothing without a demand,
The time has now come for a line in the sand,
To keep yesterday’s men from prevailing.
So we’ll stand in their way till new coal mines are banned,
For the climate is a-changing.

Come people, we know that you’re feeling the heat,
Our leaders are swayed by a corporate elite,
The system is broken and racked with deceit,
And it’s not worth the cost of maintaining,
So it’s time to step up and get out on the streets,
For the climate is a-changing.

Now the scientists tell us beyond any doubt
We’re threatened by bushfires, by heat and by drought,
And for many, the water’s about to run out,
Our hopes for the future are fading, (Shhh & build volume)
But the quiet Australians are starting to shout,
For the climate is a-changing.

We’ve written the letters and signed the petitions
We’ve spoken to ministers, phoned politicians,
They say they’re concerned about carbon emissions,
But their deeds make it clear that they’re feigning.
So let’s shake their foundations before it’s too late,
For the climate is a-changing.

Now listen Adani to the words that we say,
We’ll blockade your mine and we won’t go away,
We are camped on your doorstep and planning to stay,
And we’ll never grow tired of proclaiming –
That you’re killing tomorrow by mining today,
For the climate is a-changing. (That you’re killing … repeat)

I have had justifiable complaints about the difficulty of too many Carols, when really we just want the best ones so we attract people to TALK TO US as well cos it’s all about building the movement – eh?

So here’s just a single page with just 7 carols. Enjoy.  Crisis Carols one sheet new

But if you still want MORE CAROLS!!! read on …

4 pages back to back. That’s only 60 cents for an AMAZING collection of XR-focused rebel Chrisis material for about 40 mins of fun-filled singing. GET TO IT!!
Or your scratch bunch of singers can open the pages on their phones and read off that. Easier to read off phones at night.

This is an early selection of the Chrisis Carols all on one A4 sheet, back to back. It’s a PDF.
Crisis Carols 1 sheet Back to back

Oh and a second one from XR Christians Manchester
XR Manchester Crisis Carol songsheet

Crisis Carols is an initiative of Alex P in London … it’s an excuse for Extinction Rebels to get out on the street and sing their gorgeous, caring hearts out for some Climate Justice. Lots of people contributed lyrics! Here’s what Alex (Carol, of course) had to say about using the idea:

HOW TO CRISIS CAROL (SAFELY)
    • Get a group together – Find some people, find or write some lyrics, and have a practice.
    • Always sing in a group – the more the merrier.
    • Stay peaceful – don’t argue or retort. If asked to move on, go somewhere else but keep singing. Stay calm and be like water. Ignore dickheads – they hate it.
    • Be Strategic – Where will you sing, and who for? What are you asking them to do?
    • Be Public – Don’t be afraid of public places controlled by corporations – you can get a lot of singing in before security tells you to leave. Move slowly and keep singing.
  • Bring a Sign – make sure your your message is clear. Climate Action Now. Declare a Climate Emergency. All I Want For Christmas is a Future.
  • Have Fun! – Singing in a group is an ancient and wonderful thing. Enjoy yourself. Be silly. Clamp your feet and belt it out. A group of singing, happy people is a force to be reckoned with.
  • Stay hydrated
  • Post photos & videos for us! Love and rage,
    Carol

Can you Hear the Drums ADANI?

Writers of original Fernando: Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.
Repurposing: Jenny Fitzgibbon

Hear a full sung version HERE which you can use if there’s no local person who wants to sing it but you’d like your local rep to hear it.

Photo of the Chord chart I used is also on the above link.

Can you hear the drums, Adani?
I remember long ago when burning
coal spread warm delight
In the firelight, Adani
Generations fell in love
while maybe strumming on guitars
Not a thought of distant drums
No knowledge of disaster falling from the stars

(But) now we know the truth Adani
Every man & every woman knows t cause of climate change
We are not afraid, Adani
For the Earth we’ll stand our ground
And your Headquarters occupy
W’ won’t be ashamed of jail
The act of non-compliance is our battle cry

There’s more carbon in the air each night
We’ve got to fight Adani
Causing climate change for you and me
(There’s) no planet B, Adani
And we know that we must never lose      The stage is set –
We’ll occupy your office suite  Until you’re beat Adani.

We’ll visit you at port and pit  Until you quit Adani

When we’re old and grey Adani
We’ll remember what we did when danger
looked us in the eyes
Will you dig that coal Adani?
Hist’ry will recall your part (if you) poison water with your hand
Can you see it in our eyes
How proud we are to fight for farmers in this land

There’s more carbon in the air each night    We’ve got to fight Adani
Causing climate change for you and me    (There’s) no planet B, Adani
And we know that we must never lose               The stage is set –
We’ll occupy your office suite  Until you’re beat Adani.
We’ll visit you at port and pit  Until you quit Adani
We’ll sing and dance and use our luuuuuungs  –

Can you hear the drums?  Adani

Stand Beside Us Firm and Strong

tune: “She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain”, traditional African-American folk song
parodied by Jenny Fitzgibbon, 2014
Edited in Nov 2014 – see note at end

Tune HERE

Here we stand for those who face a rising sea
Here we stand for those who face a rising sea
Stand beside us firm and strong
Mining fossil fuels is wrong
Here we stand for those who face a rising sea

Singing leave fossil fuels in the ground
we can leave fossil fuels in the ground
We owe it to all nations
              and our younger generation

to leave Fossil Fuels in the ground

Here we stand for those who fight the forest fires
Here we stand for those who fight the forest fires
Stand beside us firm and strong
Mining fossil fuels is wrong
Here we stand for those who fight the forest fires

Singing leave fossil fuels in the ground

Here we stand for Tribal Elders and their rights
Here we stand for Tribal Elders and their rights
Stand beside us firm and strong
Mining fossil fuels is wrong
Here we stand for Tribal Elders and their rights

Singing leave fossil fuels in the ground

Here we stand to #StopAdani side by side
Here we stand to #StopAdani side by side
Here we stand to #StopAdani
cos to start that mine is barmy
Here we stand to #StopAdani side by side.

SINGING LEAVE FOSSIL FUELS IN THE GROUND …

Other potential verses:
Here we stand so people won’t be refugees …
Global climate is a local issue now …
Make the pollies think beyond their 4 year term …

**And a verse for the Laird Forest fight:
Here we stand for sacred sites of Gomeroi,
Here we stand for sacred sites of Gomeroi
Whitehaven disrespected
Every sacred site detected
here we stand for sacred sites of Gomeroi

Singing leave fossil fuels in the ground

EDIT NOTE

The Chorus used to be:

We owe it to all nations
              and to future generations
to leave Fossil Fuels in the ground
Then I read the wonderful website
http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/11/06/3589815/guide-to-winning-on-climate-clean-energy/
and adjusted it to reflect the fact that ‘future generations’ gives the impression that the children alive today will not be affected. Wrong!!

Leave it in the Ground – Dona Nobis Common Sense!

printable version here dona-nobis-no-fossil-fuel-mining-a4

sung as a round

tune “Dona Nobis Pacem” (trad. hymnal)

words by Jenny Fitzgibbon 2011

Tune HERE

PART 1: No more, No More, Fossil Fuel Mining

Leave it, leave it, in the ground

Dona Nobis 1

PART 2: There are no clean green loopholes

Leave it, leave it, in the ground

Dona Nobis 2

PART 3: Climate changes are increasing

Leave it, leave it, in the ground

Dona Nobis 3

(for the timing, each group need to end the word ‘Leave’ at the same time and say ‘it’ as togetherly as possible. This requires reversing the timing on the 5th and 6th bars of parts 2 and 3. This is corrected on the printout.)
